INSA Strasbourg has the status of an EPSCP, a public scientific, cultural or professional establishment. The school was founded in 1875 and became part of the INSA network in 2003.

Seven research laboratories cover innovative design, architecture, environmental engineering, civil engineering, surfaces engineering (metal surfaces and bio surfaces), industrial automation, artificial intelligence and information systems.
The school has resource centres that cater for the hands-on part of the courses and carry out technological research. The centres perform tests and develop products and production systems for industry.
